Rajini, the kingpin in tamil cinema has been in the industry for a long period of time but still gets critisized for not able to act. There are certain movies to prove the perception to be completely wrong. The only reason that i can think of is that stupid S.P.Muthuraman used him and portrayed him like a cartoon hero in many of his movies. He was the one who introduced catching bullet, stopping the train with one leg and so on. Rajini got stuck with such idiotic movies for a long time and slowly got tampered with such critics. Overall, he is a very talented actor who can also show variety in his performance. He also has the comedy sense and can do it well. There are highly rated performance of his during the period 80's - 90's.
These are the movies that i personally think that Rajini has done an outstanding job. There should have been much more movies for him with similar characters and roles to perform, but now it is too late.
1. Avargal (Typical sadist. Superb performance. Luckily this time, Sujatha was his wife and not Mother)
2. 6 to 60 varai (A clear life stage life).
3. Bhuvana Oru kaelvikuri
4. Mullum Malarum (National award movie)
5. Moondru Mudichu
6. 16 Vayathinilae (Fantastic one)
7. Kai kodukkum Kai (A very soft rajini)
8. Netrikkann (One of his very best and different one)
9. Nallavanukku Nallavan
10. Thillu Millu (Still a very fresh entertainer)
11. Annamalai (A very decent performance in his 90's)
12. Ragavendra (Dedication movie. Looks also like Ragavendra)
13. Anbulla Rajinikanth
14. Engaeyo Kaeta Kural (One should watch this movie to believe it)
15. Moondru Mugam (The Alexpandian character)
It is very sad that he was not given characters like the movies mentioned above, during his 2nd half of his career. He was just used as a money making machine by most of the directors and the scope for his acting completely diminished. Most of the movies were blindly made with a hope to succeed using Rajni's apperances alone. Ofcourse, Illayaraja holds a big hand for many of his success in making those songs still accountable. Overall, Rajini is the only person who can stay in the industry by topping the chart all throughout his career. Amazing and a true fact. The only big hope for him is the highly expected Sivaji and lets all believe that Shankar can give his another best like the one he gave for Kamal in Indian.
