Among all the festivals celebrated by the Hindus, my favourite is this 'Karthigai Deepam'. Say the word 'Karthigai Deepam', the picture that comes to mind is that of rows and rows of traditional lamps with different Rangoli patterns. These lights are also known as "agal vilakkus". It is so beautiful to look at the stream of lights around and the lighted lamp is considered to be an auspicious symbol. It is also believed to ward off evil forces and usher in prosperity and joy.
Karthigai Deepam is celebrated in the full moon day of the tamil month 'Karthigai' which also coincides with the Krithigai Star.On this day, evening the hindus clean their house, draw Kolams(Rangoli) in front of the house and lit the agal vilakkus and decorate their house. Some also make sweets like aval pori urundai, nel pori urundai and appam.
Deepam is celebrated in a special manner in a place called 'Thiruvannamalai' in TamilNadu. Lord Shiva asks Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to find out the exact location of his head and his feet. Since Lord Shiva takes a gigantic form, they are not able to find out anywhere. Then Lord Shiva takes the form of a jyothi (light of fire) on the hill of Thiruvannamali. Therefore, this festival is also known as Annamalai Deepam. Here, a special torch is lighted on the zenith of the hill and it is believed that Lord Shiva's jothi will be visible on this day. Every year thousands of devotees from everywhere flock to Tiruvannamalai to see the spectacular Karthigai Deepam.
