Billa 2007 Review

Posted by Swamy Srinivasan aka Kittu Mama On 9:30 PM

Billa 2007. Old wine in a new bottle did not make much of a magic on the screens, except for a few niceties here and there. It is always tough to replicate a movie that shook the town, when Raijni was in the verge of being given a title "Super star". Rajini very soon achieved the title, in the movie "Priya". It turned out that Billa 2007 has brought in much more credit to Rajini than Ajith for the fact that Rajinis emmaculate presence on the screen had completely overshadowed Ajith's at every stance. Having taken the movie with the same storyline and sequences, it was not easy for the fans to accept that Ajith had made real justice to the role. The movie ofcourse was very stylish and Ajith was able to convince a little bit, but there was no charm i would say. A dons role needs to be stylish with some mannerisms, which is a total lack from Ajith. Most of the scenes involving the character Billa, Ajith was simply walking like in a fashion show and not able to act at all.

Ajith is definitely looking smart in the movie but he has already put enough pounds after Paramasivan. His dancing steps were very slow and that was very obvious in his entry song for Velu's character. If he needs to stay for long in the industry, he would need to come up with much more expressions. Otherwise, he is slowly going to follow Arvindswamy.

I think the movie is already a hit for the hype it had created but the success factor would mainly be because of the movie getting tagged with the name Billa + Great cinematography from Nirav Shah (who actually did wonders in Dhoom) + Ajith fans + Nayantharas stylish performance. From a typical mallu girl outfit to an hollywood looking outfit, Nayantharas transformation is simply amazing. Her performance is simply the best and i'm not saying this because of the swimming pool scene. She has proven the fact that even South Indian actresses can be fit and stylish. No actress from Indian cinema has ever flaunted the body so comfortably. Nayanthara can now be truly called the Angelina Jolie of South India. Infact her intro reminds of Angelina Jolies rope scene in Mr and Mrs. Smith.

Prabhu has carried the role of Balaji and he has simply done it with ease. He for sure would start getting lots of similar roles after Billa 2007. Namitha, god only knows why she needs to be there in the film. Santhanam, came out good with some "Nakkal" dialogues but was not utilized for long. Ajith himself tried to do some comedy, but got no reaction from the audience.

The background score from Yuvan was catchy, particulary the Billa theme music. There were lots of resemblances in the score from the movie Pudhupettai(which again was scroed by Yuvan). The songs failed to even get close to the original billa version. I thought "My name is billa" would be shot nicely but it was a complete joke in the movie. All you get to see in the song is a bunch of girls and Ajith walking crazy.

Overall, Billa 2007 did not stand to the expectations. Though the movie can be called a hit, it is not the kind of movie that you can keep watching. Plus, if you dont get to watch it in the theater, then Billa 2007 has got nothing to offer for small screens.

    Kittu,

Onakku kannu manasu onnume kidayadha. Rajini's billa made a stupid star. Ajith's billa made a real super star.
