KAMAL - THE LEGEND

Posted by Swamy Srinivasan aka Kittu Mama On 10:43 AM

Life is such a path and it involves so many turns. But to portray all of them is one heck of a task. Well, not for Kamal who is born to exactly take this task. I am really thrilled when i start thinking about the movies he has done so far.

The young blood is always a powerful one and it has so much to deliver. Teenage life is the best and kamals teenage movies are the best too. Kamal is a person who accepts the fact that the teenage perversion is just a natural instinct and not to be taken seriously. With the bold mentor called KB behind him, they have done outstanding and couragious movies like Manmadha leelai, Avargal, Aval Appadi thaanand so on..The buddi glass and the bell bottom pants are still cherishable outfits. It is amazing to note that KB was the one who introduced both Kamal and Rajini. I wish KB makes one final movie with both of them again today and when that happens, i cannot imagine the outcome of the industry. I guess it might get the biggest collection to the box office ever in indian cinemas history. Waiting for such a day to come.

Kamal is a falooda in acting. He knows to react. He knows to cry. He knows to laugh. He knows to frown. He knows to modualte. He knows to dance. He knows to sing. He knows to dress. He knows to kiss. He knows to handle the heroines. He knows it all . HOLY COW !! He is the legend who actually lives in front of the camera and we all call it acting.

Kamals acting has no boundaries. The total love hero turned multi faceted hero has seen every flavors in acting. It is tough to do the number count but there are serious good numbers that would hit anybody who has seen such films.

Some of his non perishable films that i love :

Romance - Maro charithra alias Ek duje ke liye
Scenes like parents discussing and opposing kamals love and kamal turns wild talking in tamil to his dad.

Dance - Salangai Oli
Scene where Jayapradha shows the invitation and kamals reaction to it when he realizes that he is the man in the SHOW. This is my heavy favorite.

Acting - Nayagan
The young kamal is a blast in this movie. Every single scene involving young kamal in the movie is the key to movies success. The entry scene where the cop tries to wash out the complete slum area and kamal turns left to see whats happening with that angry look. My ultimate favorite.

Crying - Punnagai Mannan (Strange i said crying for a Punnagai title)
Scence were kamal cries aloud after seeing his lover dead in front of him during the suicide attempt. I believe kamal himself personally loves this scene

Sorrow - Mahanadhi Obviously the scene where he finds his daughter being dumped to be a prostitute. The movie was very well made by Santhana bharati . Kamal during those initial village scences are a treat to watch. Particularly the hair style and his veshti get up.

Comedy - Michael and Sathileelavadhi
Madana is the comedy track in the movie and he made the crowd see this movie atleast 4 times each. There can be no other movie of kamal that pulled the crowd so many times to the theatre. In Sadhi, the language he speaks is the best. He is the person who is for challenges and that konku tamil is a real treat. Ofcourse, kovai sarala was a cherry to the ice cream.

Sabala Brahmin - Meendum kokila This was one low profile kamal movie but has every charm in it. His nose stressing body language just describes his complete character in a nutshell. Sridevi in that 9 gajam costume would ask any kaalai for a taking.

Thriller - Sigappu Rojakkal This was a real trend setter in tamil cinema. Kamals total look in this movie is astonishing. I can easily guess that given todays technology, this movie could have made 100 times of an impact when compared to vettayadu vilayadu. A slick psycopath movie of those early days.

A super casual - Apporva Sagotharargal This is my crazy favorite movie. I dont know why but whenever i get to see this movie i get stuck and see the whole movie. This film is entertainment at its best. Has all the ingredients in the movie. Kamals Appu role. Rajas music. Crazys comedy. Nagesh attempt as villain. The songs. The circus animals. The big kamals freeking outfit.OMG !! its a huge list of spices here. Feel like watching it again already.

Sometihng different - Indiran Chandiran
The small Kamal in this film would even make men fall in love with him :). These were the days were kamal started acting without the mush and girls came to see him in rush. This is a fantastic movie. The screenplay was very well written. Vijayashanti with kamal scenes were cool. Nooru Nooru song with kamals excitement is the best. Kamal during romance is unbeatable. The father kamal did a great performance with that voice giving him a clear identity. The first dance with that kuyili is a must wacth too.

Political - Chaanakyan
This is the first malayalam movie i've seen in the theatre. Ofcourse there are some other movies too but thats a secret :) The flashback were kamal walks without that mush - He was looking stunning and fresh. The kiss with Urmila is unforgettable. I believe just these couple of scenes in the flashback pulled the crowd. Jayaram was a very good backing for the film.

NO VOICE - Paesum Padam
This movie is just an art by itself. No other movies in indian cinema can be made like this.
Kamals getup. Kamals expressions. The background music. Amala, the doll of those days.
The theme behind the movie. The comedy screenplay. OUTSTANDING and highly creative movie. I for sure think that this movie should have gotten much more credit. Infact a national award would have been the best for this big effort.

Innocent and Caring - Moonram pirai
Who can comment wrong about this movie. Kamal and Sri were at their best. Sridevi in particular had a heavy scope and no wonder she bagged an award for her performance. BalaMahendra, the man who was highly creative and capable during those early days did the camera work himself. You can feel the Ooty living from his camera work. A great director with immesne film making knowledge. Illayaraja and Balu combo lasts forever. The background score and the songs were nothing but a story in intself. Kannae kalaimaney is a song in the history of tamil cinema, wherein it was Kannadaasan's last written song in his life.

Last but not the least
Corruption - INDIAN
Kamal in this movie was involved so much after a long period of time. The corrupted kamalin this movie is the best. The RTO office scences involving kamal is an absolute treat. The comedy scenes were the best part of the movie. The small kamals expressions were all natural and Shankar used kamal in the best possible way. Manisha and Urmila did well too. Rehmans background score was super duper. I have seen this movie humpty number of times and could not still resist after seeing the DVD box at my home.

I dont want to stop but i've to stop. Kamal is just an inspiration to me in every aspect. I wish he long lives and make us live seeing quality movies.

  2. It is a fact that kamal is influenced by Al Pacino but he definitely has his own style too. Al Pacino has that looks with wide opened eyes and i think that is the one that kamal tries to immitate a lot.

Hi Kittu. That was nice to read.

Small tidbit: if my memory serves me right, Pushpaka Vimana aka Pesum Padam won the National Award for Best Entertainment Film or something like that.

Some time ago, I wrote a similar post on the blog dedicated to Kamal, All Things Kamal. Check it out...
